Jason Collins, NBA’s first out gay player, has tragically died at the age of 47, leaving behind his husband Brunson Green.
Collins was diagnosed with a brain tumour in September 2025, and just three months later shared that he had brain cancer.
The devastating news came just months after he married his long-time partner Brunson Green, in May 2025.
The couple tied the knot in a ceremony in Austin, Texas, with loved ones sharing photos of the outdoors wedding on Instagram. Famous faces including The Help actress Octavia Spencer, as well as Collins’ teammate from the New Jersey Nets Richard Jefferson were in attendance.

They confirmed their relationship to The Hollywood Reporter in 2014, the same year Collins retired from professional basketball, and a year after he came out as gay in 2013. They got engaged in 2023, during the Los Angeles Lakers Pride Night.
Speaking in 2023, Collins told Sports Illustrated that he met Green at a housewarming party, but he was dating someone else at the time.
The next time they ran into each other, Collins was single. And the rest is history.
