Helena Bonham Carter‘s team has denied claims that a behind-the-scenes clash with Sandra Bernhard is the reason for her exit from The White Lotus.
The Sweeney Todd actress was this week confirmed to have left The White Lotus just a week into the production of season four. A HBO spokesperson told Deadline: “With filming just underway on Season 4 of The White Lotus, it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set.”
Soon after, the Daily Mail reported that a backstage clash with L Word icon Sandra Bernhard was the reason for her departure.
An unnamed source claimed to the publication: “The word is Helena left because of a clash with Sandra Bernhard.”
However, a representative of Bonham Carter’s denied this, saying she had never met Bernhard.
What is happening with Helena Bonham Carter’s character on The White Lotus season 4?
HBO have confirmed that the role which Helena Bonham Carter was set to play is being changed.
A spokesperson added in a statement: “The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten and will be recast in the coming weeks. HBO, the producers and Mike White are saddened that they won’t get to work with her, but remain ardent fans and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon.”
Rumours are now swirling about who could replace her.
Real Housewives favourite tipped to replace Helena Bonham Carter
It’s been reported that Bride of Chucky icon Jennifer Tilly could be set to replace Helena Bonham Carter.
An anonymous tip was sent to gossip site Deux Moi which said Oscar-nominated Tilly, who is now a fan-favourite member of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills cast, is “in negotiations” for the show. It added: “Announcement should be made week of May 4th if all goes well!”
The Instagram post was captioned: “This is a rumour, but genius if true! Please note this email was sent anonymously and cannot be verified.”
Fans are certainly hopeful that the rumour is true, though. One commented: “Give us Jennifer Tilly.” Another said: “This would be iconic!” A third wrote: “I feel like this is too good to be true.”
