“Thank Goodness” we’ve got a release date for the Wicked: For Good soundtrack. And we’re ready to be changed to the better.
The sequel to 2024’s Wicked is one of the most highly anticipated films of the year, and fans are hungry for any tidbits.
So, today’s (Wednesday 17 September) announcement that the soundtrack will be available on 21 November, the same day the film opens in cinemas, is good news indeed.
The announcement also confirmed the names of the two original songs written for Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, who play Elphaba and Glinda respectively.
The announcement begins with a reveal of the album artwork, a play on the iconic Wicked musical artwork. The short promo is soundtracked by the track “Thank Goodness,” though we only hear the ensemble.
“THANK GOODNESS! Wicked: For Good – The Soundtrack coming November 21st is available for pre-order now!,” the caption reads. The Wicked Instagram account also commented: “Prepare to be changed for the better.”
After the artwork is revealed the track list is then unveiled. As expected, most of the songs featured in the stage musical’s second act are present and correct. But what’s confirmed in full for the first time are the names of the new songs.
We already knew that Glinda’s would be titled “The Girl in the Bubble,” but not where it would sit. We now know it comes towards the very end of the film, right before the titular song, “For Good.”
And for the first time Elphaba’s new song has also been named, “No Place Like Home.” The title references a line from the original film, The Wizard of Oz, “there’s no place like home.”
Last week Wicked director Jon M. Chu teased both new songs, written by Stephen Schwartz who composed Wicked originally. Chu told Entertainment Weekly the songs focus on “‘What is home? And what happens when you are fighting for a home that you realise doesn’t even want you there, or was never meant for you? Do you defend it? Do you fight for it? Does anyone else think of home the same as you?’”

“Every Day More Wicked” is also a new song. The track doesn’t exist in the stage show, which opens with “Thank Goodness.” However, the lyrics are included in “Thank Goodness.”
While Wednesday’s announcement has drawn excitement from the Wicked fandom, it has also stirred questions, one in particular. “Why’d yall cut the finale?” people have asked in a variety of ways, expressing shock at the final song of the musical seemingly being left off the track list.
In the stage show the “Finale ‘Wicked’” brings the events of the show full circle to where it begins with the apparent melting of Elphaba by Dorothy as seen in The Wizard of Oz. Elphaba and Glinda sing a reprise of “For Good.” Meanwhile, the citizens of Oz celebrate the death of the Wicked Witch of the West.
We’re sure there’s a good reason the song has been let off the track list and all questions will be answered come November.
