Shawn Mendes, it appears, likes to be called “daddy”. The world found out this news at the same time as learning about the star’s hair care.
A year ago, the singer said he was “figuring it out” when it came to his sexuality. This came after he appeared to use the lyrics of “The Mountain” to address rumours that had dogged him for years.
On Monday (3 November), footage was posted on TikTok of a fan event Mendes held where he answered questions from the audience. It’s not entirely clear when or where this took place but he is seen sitting on a stool in front of a group of mostly women (as far as we can see).
The video shows Mendes pointing to someone off camera who starts with: “Oh, hey, daddy.” Mendes throws his head back, taking the comment in good humour while members of the audience laugh.

“What are you using in your hair because you have the nicest hair?” the same person asks.
“My hair, I thought I was having a bad hair day actually,” the star responds. “I’m using Moroccan oil. I wash my hair every other day and I went in the ocean this morning. That’s the best thing for your hair.
“You have great hair. I don’t know why you’re asking me,” he adds. But before moving on, the 27-year-old Canadian singer admits: “I love that you called me daddy,” which leads to more laughter.

When he opened up about his sexuality, Mendes said: “It always felt like such an intrusion on something very personal to me, something I was figuring out in myself, something I had yet to discover and still have yet to discover it.
“The truth about my life and my sexuality is I’m just figuring it out like everyone and it feels really scary because we live in a society that has a lot to say about that.”

Despite having dated fellow singers, including Camila Cabello and Sabrina Carpenter, Mendes has had to spend years denying he was gay. In 2016, he addressed his “gay vibe” on Snapchat, saying: “it shouldn’t make a difference if I was or wasn’t.”
In 2018, he told Rolling Stone magazine that the speculation over his sexuality was a “massive, massive thing”. And speaking to The Guardian two years later, he dismissed the rumours as “ridiculous”.
