Heather Peace has said her EastEnders adoption storyline will make a “little bit of soap history”.
Peace plays Eve Unwin opposite Balvinder Sopal as Suki Panesar. Over the past year, the pair’s relationship has had its ups and downs.
They kicked off 2025 by tying the knot in the show’s New Year’s Day episode, becoming the first lesbian couple to marry in the soap’s 40-year history. But there were troubles ahead when Suki’s granddaughter, Avani fell pregnant after sleeping with bad boy Joel.

Joining Gaby Roslin on The Make a Difference Show on Sunday (2 November), Peace said having played “the love story in real time” the adoption plot would follow suit.
“I think this is probably going to be one of those arcs of how long it takes [to adopt a child]. It opens up all sorts of stories within the story: the doubts and the fears, the insecurities, the coming together, communication, the obstacles of Eve’s past, and Suki maybe not believing in her ability as a mother from her past experience. So, there’s a lot to explore.”
The lesbian actress, who has three daughters, Annie Mary and twins Jessie and Lola, with wife Ellie Dickinson, was “excited” at making “a little bit of soap history again” and portraying “a solid woman-and-woman marriage”.
Discussing Eve and Suki’s somewhat-rocky relationship over the past year, Peace pointed out that “soaps will always create the drama” adding: “If we were just saying ‘pass the salt’, everybody would be really bored!”

The arc was also “the beginning” of a deeper exploration of Eve and her background, she hinted.
Earlier this year, Peace revealed that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Just two months later, she shared the news that her wife had also been diagnosed with the disease. Touching on where she is now, Peace said: “I’m OK, I feel great in myself.”
Breast cancer is the most-common form of the disease in the UK. According to Breast Cancer Now, on average, one woman is diagnosed every 10 minutes. For a full list of symptoms, visit the NHS website.
EastEnders airs on Monday to Thursday, starting at 7.30pm, on BBC1.
