Costume designer officially wins ‘Gay Halloween’ by dressing as Cynthia Erivo’s acrylic nail

NYC-based costume designer Brendan McCann has gone seriously viral, and even caught the attention of Wicked star Cynthia Erivo herself, after dressing as one of her acrylic nails for Halloween.

Cynthia Erivo’s elaborate statement nails caused quite a stir during her round of promotion for Wicked part one, and caught the attention of, well, pretty much everyone, but particularly Gay Twitter™, who were in awe at the sheer c**ntiness of her blinged-up talons.

And with gay Christmas, otherwise known as Halloween, looming, Brendan McCann decided that there could be no better tribute to the iconic queer diva than dressing up in one of her nails. And the internet agreed.

In a post on X, he posted a picture of his outfit, with the caption: “I hate gay Halloween what do you mean your Cynthia Erivo’s acrylic nail.”

The ‘I hate gay Halloween’ meme has gained traction in recent years as a way to poke fun at the often incredibly niche nature of queer Halloween costumes, and this has to be one of the most niche of all time:

The post went incredibly viral, with over 20,000 retweets and over 11 million views at the time of writing, and the comments are almost universally united in praise for Brendan and his creativity.

One person responded: “didn’t know it was possible to win gay Halloween until rn actually.”

Another added: “So much dedication and talent omg.”

A third referenced another iconic Cynthia Erivo moment, writing: “Holding space for this.”

But what truly gagged everyone was when Cynthia herself posted a pic of the costume on her Instagram story: giving Brendan the recognition he so richly deserved:

What’s more, Cynthia Erivo’s ACTUAL NAIL ARTIST also responded, writing: “being cynthia’s nail artist, i can confirm I AM HONORED… this shit is insane.”
