It’s official, once again: Weapons star Julia Garner will star as Madonna in the Queen of Pop’s official biopic.
Several years after the three-time Emmy award-winning actress was first attached to the long-awaited Madonna biopic, she has confirmed that it’s still in the works, and she’s still playing Madge.
Asked by W Magazine whether she is 100 per cent playing the “Vogue” hitmaker, Garner excitedly responded: “Yeah! Yes.”
“I can’t say too much about it, but yes, it’s a work in progress,” she said.
Grilled on her favourite Madonna song, Garner offered: “Oh my god, I have so many. I love ‘Borderline,’ that’s probably my favourite. I also love ‘Papa Don’t Preach’. I love ‘Burning Up’, I love Confessions On A Dance Floor, I grew up with that album.
“Obviously ‘Vogue’ and ‘Ray of Light’,” she continued. “I love all of Madonna basically is what I’m trying to say.”
Madonna social media fan pages have reacted to the confirmation by sharing side-by-side photos of 31-year-old Gardner alongside pictures of Madonna at age 32.

“Perfect casting choice,” one fan declared.
“Julia you were born for this,” wrote a second.
Julia Garner says the Madonna biopic is “supposed to still happen” as she recalls her audition for the part:
“I asked myself “What would Madonna do?” [She would] convince you that she deserves, you know, to be in this room, and I owned it. I was kind of like, ‘You can take it or… pic.twitter.com/JYS251SKQL

Back in 2022, Garner was reportedly chosen as the woman to lead the Madonna biopic, which was then titled Who’s That Girl.
The rumour came after a round of reportedly gruelling ‘Madonna bootcamp’ style auditions, which saw actresses and musicians including Florence Pugh, Alexa Demie, Bebe Rexha and Sky Ferreira in the mix for the role.
In early 2023, it was announced the Madonna biopic would be put on pause while the 67-year-old “Girl Gone Wild” singer took her greatest hits show The Celebration Tour across the world.
Last year, Madonna confirmed that work on the biopic was back on, and that it could be turned into a TV series rather than a film.
Then, in May, Deadline reported that Madonna had partnered with Netflix to produce a limited TV series about her life, helmed by Deadpool and Wolverine director Shawn Levy.
Garner’s name was attached to the project then, and in July, Garner said that the biopic was “supposed to still happen”.
Currently, Julia Garner is cruising at the top of the box office with word-of-mouth horror movie hit, Weapons.
