Comedian and actor Tig Notaro has spoken about the end of her friendship with her one of her former “favourite friends,” Cheryl Hines.
The 54-year-old comedian used to present the Tig & Cheryl: True Story podcast with the Curb Your Enthusiasm actress where they’d discuss documentaries with their guests. However, Hines’ marriage to Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the current US secretary of health and well-known vaccine sceptic, became an issue in the relationship in the run-up to last year’s presidential election.
RFK Jr. was running for president as an independent nominee but eventually dropped out and endorsed Trump. Upon becoming president, Trump made Kennedy Jr. his secretary of health and human Services despite the latter’s claims of a link between vaccines and autism, and his denial of HIV/AIDs.
Appearing on the most recent episode of the Breaking Bread With Tom Papa podcast, Notaro said she and Hines had “made each other laugh so hard” with their own podcast.
She continued, “It was fun to have to watch a documentary every week, but also we took the pressure off, because we would ask each other things like, ‘Who are you attracted to in this documentary?’”
But Notaro explained that when Kennedy Jr. announced his run to become president she “needed to step away.” She added, “there are beliefs that were like a gnat on the arm years ago that were getting further into the spotlight.”
Notaro went on to explain that Hines had wanted her friend to hear her husband out on his ideas. “I was like, ‘I can’t, I can’t, I can’t.’ I just didn’t trust it,” she said. “And then he endorsed Trump, and then it just got hard to…”
As to where the relationship is now Notaro said, “I think where it has led is… It’s not my world. It’s a hard pass. You’re okaying a particular ride for this country to go on.”
She added, “I want to get back to prioritising people that bring me joy and workloads that bring me joy.”
