Kate McKinnon explains why lesbians love Benedict Cumberbatch and Andy Samberg

Saturday Night Live legend and lesbian icon Kate McKinnon has explained why she thinks there is a sapphic interest in Andy Samberg and Benedict Cumberbatch, both of whom she stars alongside in her new movie.

In The Roses, Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman play the titular married couple, Theo and Ivy Rose. A seemingly happily married couple, cracks soon emerge in the relationship, which end up exploding into all-out hostility.

Trapped in the middle are their family and friends, including McKinnon’s character, Amy, and her husband, Barry played by fellow SNL alum Andy Samberg. And as well as being married to Barry, Amy is sexually attracted to Theo.

In an interview to promote the film with MTV UK, McKinnon was asked for her thoughts on the sapphic appeal Samberg and Cumberbatch have.

“Well, they’re good guys,” she begins. “They’re beefcakes, they’re handsome, I love a handsome guy as much as the next les[bian].” McKinnon was “so excited” to join what she called “the great tradition of les[bian] comedians being sexually aggressive with straight men.”

She continued, “A trope pioneered, or maybe not be pioneered by but exploded by Jane Lynch in the work of Judd Apatow.” Examples of Lynch’s work where this trope is on show include The 40-Year-Old-Virgin, Glee, and Role Models. McKinnon then finished, “I’ve studied the canon and [I’m] proud to join.”

The Roses also stars Alison Janney, Ncuti Gatwa, Hala Finley, Wells Rappaport, Sunita Mani, Zoë Chao, Jamie Demetriou, Belinda Bromilow, and Akie Kotabe.

The Roses is in cinemas now.
