The Red, White & Royal Blue sequel has officially been announced! And, what’s more, the film has a brand new title, Red, White & Royal Wedding.
That’s not all: Jamie Babbit has been announced as the sequel’s director. Thankfully, the film will see the return of both Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez as Prince Henry and Alex Claremont-Diaz respectively.
Red, White & Royal Blue proved to be a smash-hit success when it debuted on Prime Video in 2023. Galitzine plays closeted British royal Prince Henry and Zakhar Perez portrays Alex Claremont-Diaz, the bisexual son of a female US president, who go from enemies to lovers.
Red, White & Royal Wedding was given the green light by Amazon MGM Studios on Wednesday (15 October).
As well as Babbit being announced as the film’s director, taking over from Matthew López who directed Red, White & Royal Blue, it was confirmed that the film has been written by López, Gemma Burgess, as well as the author of the novel Red, White & Royal Blue, Casey McQuiston.
The news was also announced via the Red, White & Royal Blue Instagram account. Sharing a screenshot of the news on Instagram Zakhar Perez added, “Hold on, I need a second.”
Julie Rapaport, the head of film, production, and development at Amazon MGM Studios, said in a statement, “After seeing the incredible outpouring of love for Red, White & Royal Blue from fans around the world, it’s clear Alex and Henry’s story truly resonated with audiences.” Rapaport added, “we can’t wait to bring fans an unforgettable new chapter in their love story.”
López shared his own excitement at the news adding, “It’s been a blast to dream up the next chapter,” of Alex and Henry’s story. Meanwhile, McQuiston said, “Working with this team to bring Red, White & Royal Blue to life has been a dream come true, and I hope readers and watchers alike will love how the story continues in the sequel.”
And Babbit expressed her delight at returning to the “queer love universe.” She said, “After directing But I’m a Cheerleader in my 20s, I’m thrilled to be back in the queer love universe of Red, White & Royal Wedding. We all need this kind of optimism, fantasy, and gay joy. I’m thrilled to work with this brilliant team.”

Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter are returning to produce. They will be joined by Michael McGrath, Matthew López, Jennifer Salke, Casey McQuiston, and Michael Constable.
The last film ended with Alex and Henry’s relationship being made public by an old flame of Alex’s and the pair defying the fictional take on the British royal family to be open about their relationship publicly. Alex’s mum, President Ellen Claremont (Uma Thurman), also won a second term as president and Alex and Henry celebrated their happy ending.
Praised by audiences and critics alike, there were soon demands for a sequel. News of a second film was announced last year, despite there being no book on which to base it. Galitzine, Zakhar Perez and Thurman were all set to return. The last we heard was from McQuiston who in August said “our pencils are down,” which left fans confused.

While plot details for Red, White & Royal Wedding remain scarce, McQuiston has previously teased what fans can expect from the sequel. The non-binary author said it would offer “a glimpse into Alex and Henry’s life after the confetti has finished falling from the first movie, and you have to move forward together as two adults in a real, serious adult partnership.”
No updates have been given on a production schedule or planned release date for Red, White & Royal Wedding.
