It: Welcome to Derry arrives on HBO soon – here’s everything we know about the Stephen King series

Horror fans, listen up! Here’s everything you need to know about upcoming TV series It: Welcome to Derry. And no, it’s not an It and Derry Girls crossover… sadly.

HBO’s new show is a nine-episode series that will serve as a prequel to Stephen King’s best-selling, terrifying story about Pennywise, an ancient, evil creature who often appears as a clown. It has been developed by Andy and Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs, all of whom were involved in the 2017 film.

It’s not the first small-screen adaptation of the story, there was also a two-part mini-series in the early 90s, starring Rocky Horror‘s Tim Curry and Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s werewolf Seth Green.

What is It: Welcome to Derry about?

The series has been mapped out as a three-season story, to be told in reverse. Events begin in 1962 when a couple move to Derry with their son, just as disturbing incidents begin to unfold.

Andy Muschietti, who directed both It and It Chapter Two (2019), told Radio TU that a second and third season would jump back in time to explore earlier events.

“For 27 years, it’s the guy trying to figure out what it is, what did it, who did it, who saw it, and all that stuff.

“They talk about catastrophic events from the past, like the fire in the Black Spot… the massacre of the Bradley Gang, a gang of bank robbers in the 30s… and the explosion at the Kitchener Ironworks. Every time [evil clown Pennywise] comes out of hibernation, there is a catastrophic event that happens at the beginning of that cycle.
