Tributes have been paid to the fashion icon Giorgio Armani who has died aged 91.
It was announced on Thursday (4 September) that the fashion designer had passed away, leaving behind a strong legacy. Launching his brand in 1975, Giorgio Armani became synonymous with a timeless sense of style as well as a fluid approach to tailoring.
Among those to wear his creations and designs are Julia Roberts, Lady Gaga, Richard Gere, and many more.
In a statement announcing Armani’s death his company described its creator as a “tireless engine.”
Among the first to pay tribute was Donatella Versace, Versace’s chief brand ambassador and sometimes rival of Armani. Posting on Instagram on Thursday she wrote, “The world lost a giant today. He made history and will be remembered forever.”
Julia Roberts, who famously wore one of Armani’s menswear suits to the 1990s Golden Globes, posted on Instagram a photo of the two of them and wrote, “A true friend. A Legend.”
On X/Twitter actor Russell Crowe paid tribute to Armani’s “deep contribution, to fashion, to design, to popular culture.” He recalled wearing an Armani suit at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival premiere of LA Confidential. “That began a love affair with Armani suits that continues to this day,” he said.

1997 at the Cannes film festival, after my bag was lost in transit, LA Confidential producer Arnon Milchan sent me to the Armani store with a credit card to get a suit for the premiere.

Reuters reports actress Cate Blanchett as saying, “Rest in peace Mr. Giorgio Armani.” Model Cindy Crawford said she was “Heartbroken to hear about the passing of a legend.”
Reuters also reported that Giorgio Armani had been unwell for some time, and was forced to drop out of his group’s shows at Milan’s Men’s Fashion Week in June 2025.
A funeral chamber will be set up on Saturday and Sunday in Milan, his company confirmed.
