ChatGPT erotica is coming, announces OpenAI boss

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced ChatGPT users will soon be able to access more risqué content, in a move to “treat adult users like adults”.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Altman wrote: “We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right.

“Now that we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools, we are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases.”

He went on to say that in a few weeks the AI firm will roll out a new version of its popular chatbot ChatGPT which “allows people to have a personality”, explaining: “If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing).”

Altman also announced “as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our “treat adult users like adults” principle” OpenAI will allow NSFW content such as erotica for “verified adults”.

In a separate post, in regards to the adult content, Altman said users “won’t get it unless you ask for it”, suggesting there will be some sort of application or opt-in option.

It is currently unclear what form the mature content would take or what policies could be implemented to prevent illegal content being generated by users. Altman also shared no information about what material would be used to train the AI in mature content.

The announcement marks a stark change in policy as previously ChatGPT did not allow mature content and comes months after Elon Musk’s xAI introduced two sexually explicit chatbots – an anime girl called Ani and a red panda named Rudy.

Back in February, Altman rejected a $97.4 billion (£72.7 billion) takeover bid led by Musk which sought “all assets” of the tech company.

In response to Musk’s offer, Altman threw shade at the Telsa boss, writing on X: “No thank you, but we will buy Twitter for $9.74 billion (£7.85 billion), if you want.”

Billionaire Musk purchased Twitter in October 2022 for approximately $44 billion (£34.8 billion) and since then has rebranded the social media platform as X and courted controversy for removing hate-speech protectionsreinstating controversial users – not least, Donald Trump – and told cautious advertisers, worried their products might appear next far-right content, to “go f**k themselves”.

Investment giant Fidelity suggested in 2024 that X may have lost close to 80 per cent of its value since Musk’s takeover, however it is important to note other firms could value the company differently.
