Lucy Dacus, of queer band boygenius, has declared “f**k the state” after marrying four more couples mid-show while appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
On Monday (13 October), Dacus posted to Instagram to thank the couples who got married as part of her tour. She performed her heavenly track “Best Guess” for several newlyweds on Kimmel’s show.
Halfway through her appearance, Dacus swaps her guitar for a ceremonial book in which she marries the four couples on stage. All four declare “I do.”
Lucy Dacus has long used her platform for her LGBTQ+ activism. This adorable exchange of vows has been a repeated highlight throughout Dacus’ tour. She has officiated 154 weddings during the Forever is a Feeling Tour.
After growing concerns that equal marriage might be reversed under Donald Trump’s presidency, Dacus offered her fans an alternative way to say “I do”.
As an official marriage officiant, Dacus was permitted to officiate weddings from the stage in various US cities.
With Forever is a Feeling, Dacus confirmed a romantic relationship with longtime friend and bandmate Julien Baker. Dacus seems totally loved-up, with several tracks sweetly dedicated to Baker.
Posting on Instagram for the tour’s conclusion, Dacus shared: “Maybe some people got to see their first gay wedding and noticed the world did not crumble under their feet lol.
“But sincerely, doing these weddings has been a huge honor. Can’t believe that so many of you were willing to share your Big Day with the rest of us. I hope every single one of you never experiences a bad day for the rest of your life.”
“And f**k the state for continually toying around with the idea of revoking marriage equality,” Dacus also wrote.
“It wasn’t a prereq, but 120 of the marriages were between queer people. Plenty of people made this decision because they weren’t sure how long they would have the chance, or never planned to have a ceremony because their families were unsupportive.”
Additionally, she added, “I don’t know what to say other than I hope you find love in your heart. Everyone deserves to choose their own family.”
