Chappell Roan sets up fund for trans youth, raises almost half a million dollars

Lesbian pop princess Chappell Roan has founded an organisation to fundraise for transgender youth and the wider LGBTQ+ community.

The “Good Luck, Babe!” singer announced via a newsletter to her fans yesterday (23 October) that she had set up The Midwest Princess Project to raise money that will be distributed to a range of LGBTQ+ and trans-specific charities.

In her message, she announced that the project had already raised over $400,000 via her recent Visions of Damsels & Other Dangerous Things mini tour in North America.

Roan wrote that “those funds will be donated to incredible organisations making a positive impact for trans youth in their communities”.

“Outside of transaction fees to host the donation page and limited costs for my team to effectively manage the project, we have committed to donating every dollar possible to the organisations that need it most,” she added.

A logline on the project’s website reads: “Chappell Roan founded The Midwest Princess Project to uplift trans youth and LGBTQ+ communities through action, care, and connection.”

The LGBTQ+ organisations supported so far by the project include Glo and The Center Project in Roan’s home state Missouri, the Trans Wellness Center and Trans Latin Coalition in Los Angeles, and The Ali Forney Center and The Center in New York.

The 27-year-old star has become known as much as an emblem of the LGBTQ+ community as she is for her music.

Some of her biggest hits, including “Pink Pony Club”, “The Giver” and “The Subway” were written about her experiences as a lesbian woman.

Earlier this year, while accepting her BRIT Award for International Artist of the Year, she dedicated the accolade to “trans artists, drag queens, and Sinéad O’Connor”.

Chappell Roan has launched The Midwest Princess Project, a nonprofit initiative dedicated to supporting trans youth and LGBTQ+ communities through “action, care, and connection.” So far, the project has raised over $400,000 with combined efforts from Roan’s sold-out “Visions of Damsels and Other Dangerous Things” pop-up shows across New York, Los Angeles, and Kansas City .A dollar from every ticket sold from the 8-date run will go to organizations like the Ali Forney Center, TransLatin@ Coalition, and The GLO Center, among others — all of which provide vital resources for trans youth.“I am so excited to announce The Midwest Princess Project!” Roan wrote in a post to her Instagram. “These funds will be donated to incredible organizations making a positive impact for trans youth in their communities.” #ChappellRoan #Transyouth #midwestprincess #transrights #lgbtqia

“Because of all of those people, they have laid the groundwork for me to be here today. I did not give up because of them, and I will continue going because of them,” she said.

Similarly, while talking to reporters on the Grammy Award red carpet earlier this year – where she won the Best New Artist award – Roan said that anti-trans mouthpieces would “never” be able to ruin trans joy.

“It’s brutal right now, but trans people have always existed and they will forever exist, and they will never no matter what happens take trans joy away,” she said, seemingly addressing Donald Trump’s persistent attacks on the LGBTQ+ community.

Chappell Roan isn’t the only pop star to put her money where her mouth is when it comes to supporting the trans community.

Last week, it was confirmed that Sabrina Carpenter would be donating a portion of the funds raised from ticket sales to her Short n’ Sweet tour to the Transgender Law Center, via her own fundraising organisation, The Sabrina Carpenter Fund.
