Unless you’ve been living under a rock for several months, you’ll be aware that Sean Combs, a.k.a. Diddy, has been on trial for, amongst other things, racketeering and sex-trafficking. But why are people now Googling whether the disgraced rapper is actually gay?
Yesterday (2 July), Sean “Diddy” Combs was acquitted of racketeering and sex trafficking charges, but found guilty on two lesser charges of transportation of former girlfriends for prostitution, NBC News reports. He was denied bail, with the judge making it clear that Combs must stay in jail until his sentencing.
Reacting to the news that Sean Combs had been acquitted of some of his alleged crimes, rapper 50 Cent appeared to praise Combs for “beating” the charges before then dubbing him “the Gay John Gotti.”
“Diddy beat the Feds that boy a bad man!” the rapper, who has been publicly feuding with Sean Combs for 25 years, said in an Instagram post, adding: “Beat the Rico, he the Gay John Gotti,” the rapper added.
Who was John Gotti?

John Gotti was a Mafia boss born in 1940, and head of the Gambiono crime family in New York City, who was nicknamed the “Teflon Don” by the media after several high-profile trials in the 1980s ended in acquittals, meaning the “charges didn’t stick”. However, it was later revealed that the trials had been influenced by jury tampering and witness intimidation. Gotti died in 2002, aged 61.
Why did 50 Cent imply Diddy is gay?
Rumours about Sean Combs’ sexuality resurfaced in January 2025, when ex-Bad Boy rapper Chopper claimed Combs was “secretly gay” and once hooked up with another “powerful” male figure in the music industry. Bad Boy Entertainment is an American hip-hop record label founded by Sean Combs in 1993.
HipHop DX reported that Chopper claimed that he once witnessed Puffy “tonguing down” another, unnamed, high-powered music industry man in a recording studio.
“I walked in the studio and seen two powerful men doing things that was uncomfortable to my eyes. You can take that how you want it,” he said.
He added: “I opened the door, I seen what I seen, and I hurried and slammed the door […] It f**ked me up, I’m not gonna lie. I looked at Diddy differently after that. I wasn’t feeling that Bad Boy s**t no more.”

In 2024, The Love Album producer Rodney ‘Lil Rod’ Jones accused Diddy of sexually harassing him in a lawsuit. In the lawsuit, filed in a New York federal court on 26 February, Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones, a former producer and videographer for the music mogul, alleged that Combs sexually harassed, drugged and threatened him while they worked together between September 2022 and November 2023.
However, Combs’ lawyer, Shawn Holley, said of Jones’ accusations at the time: “His reckless name-dropping about events that are pure fiction and simply did not happen is nothing more than a transparent attempt to garner headlines. We have overwhelming, indisputable proof that his claims are complete lies.”
Jones also claimed the Bad Boy founder had had sex with fellow rapper Meek Mill. Meek Mill denied the claims, writing on X: “No man or watt would ever approach me about gay activity.”
When is Sean Combs being sentenced and how long might he get in prison?
According to CNN, although Diddy was acquitted of the more serious charges of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking, he is still facing up to 20 years in prison.
There will be a hearing next week to address the scheduling of his sentencing.
