Wet Leg front woman Rhian Teasdale has discussed her sexuality in a new interview as the band has announced its second album and an accompanying tour.
The “Chaise Longue” singer-songwriter, who previously identified herself as “queer… querying”, is joined in the band by fellow lead Hester Chambers, as well as drummer Henry Holmes, guitarist Joshua Mobaraki and bassist Ellis Durand.
The band’s sophomore album, Moisturizer, follows their 2022 self-titled debut. It was announced earlier this week that the new album will be released on 11 July 2025. A small tour will travel around the UK between 21 and 29 May.
The band debuted the first single, ‘catch these fists’ on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon on 3 April.
Speaking to The Guardian about the upcoming album, said to be more romantic than the first, Teasdale discussed how she met her current partner, who identifies as non-binary, at a festival in Portugal in 2021.
“It was love at first sight,” she told the paper. “Literally. It was just an energy. It was just like: Oh. Ohhh! Because of course I wasn’t looking for love, in any capacity, at all. But that’s what they say, isn’t it? It always comes when you least expect it.”
Teasdale went on to share that until she met her partner she had always assumed she was straight, adding of sexuality: “It’s not very mysterious.” She went on to say that, “The thing with queer love, as well, is that, if you’re female-presenting, people assume you’re best friends.”
Discussing writing love songs for the new Wet Leg album, Teasdale said she had found it difficult to write one “lusting over a guy,” adding, “Maybe that was something in my subconscious that was just … very gay. It just feels so much more empowering to write it about a non-man.”
Bandmate Chambers told The Guardian of her friend’s romance: “It made me really happy to see my friend so happy and in love that she wrote about it.”
In a 2022 interview with Soho House, Teasdale touched on the topics of her sexuality and her partner when asked about Harry Styles, having then recently supported him on his seemingly never-ending Love on Tour. Responding to a question about whether the band found the “Watermelon Sugar” singer as attractive as everyone else in the world Teasdale replied: “He’s a pretty good-looking guy. But… I have a pretty good-looking girlfriend.”
She also said the relationship was “relatively new,” and that, “Until now I’ve always dated men.”
As for how Teasdale identified she said: “I would just say queer… querying?” She then added: “You don’t have to put that pressure on yourself, to know what you are. I don’t know if I will ever date a man again.”
