The first full-length trailer for Emma Mackey’s sizzling new queer film Hot Milk has been released.
Sex Education and Barbie actress Mackey stars as Sofia, a mid-twenties anthropology student who heads to Spain with her mother Rose (Killing Eve’s Fiona Shaw) in search of a cure for the mystery illness which has left Rose wheelchair-bound.
Trapped by a co-dependent relationship of her mother’s making, Sofia yearns for freedom as she spends her days strolling Spain’s scorching beaches and swimming in the sea. While there, she encounters Ingrid (Vicky Krieps), an enigmatic seamstress and the pair begin a fluid summer romance.
An official synopsis reads: “The film follows Rose (Shaw) and her daughter Sofia (Mackey) as they travel to the seaside town Almería to consult an enigmatic healer who may hold the key to Rose’s mysterious illness.

“But in the sun-drenched town, Sofia, trapped till now by her mother’s condition, begins to shed her inhibitions as she is drawn to the magnetic charms of a free-spirited traveller, Ingrid (Krieps).
“Sofia’s increased freedom becomes too much for her controlling mother, and as the hot sun beats down, their relationship simmers with pent-up resentment and bitterness, threatening to tear the fragile threads that hold them together.”
The trailer points to troubling family secrets, bubbling tensions between the mother and daughter, and some red-hot shower scenes between Sofia and Ingrid.
Hot Milk is directed by Colette writer Rebecca Lenkiewicz in her directorial debut, and is adapted from Deborah Levy’s hit 2016 novel of the same name. The book was nominated for the 2016 Man Booker prize.
Speaking to PinkNews back in March, Lenkiewicz praised Mackey, Shaw and Krieps for their “incredible” performances and chemistry.
“Emma Mackey has such an incredible presence and you can see the thoughts just from quite an impassive look. She never overplays anything and she’s so detailed in what temperature her emotion is at that moment,” Lenkiewicz said.
“[Mackey and Shaw] really connected and were kind of thrown in together. I think both of them had such brilliant takes on their own character that they were instantly mother and daughter,” she added, sharing that Shaw was keen to stay in the wheelchair while filming.
“You’d see them around set with Emma negotiating little bumps. It was sort of moving and very authentic.”

As for filming the intimate scenes between Mackey and Krieps, the filmmaker said she let them have free reign over what worked for them.
“Emma and Vicky just loved each other, you know? They really enjoyed the intimate scenes. Vicky would say, ‘Shall I do this to you? Shall I do that?’ It was fun… and they were both so open about everything, about their bodies,” she explained.
“I didn’t say, ‘Do this, do that’. It was just like: here you are, you’re in love, see what happens.”
Hot Milk will land in UK cinemas on 4 July.
