Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo author Taylor Jenkins Reid comes out as bisexual

Taylor Jenkins Reid, the author of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, has come out publicly as bisexual.

Reid surged in popularity during the pandemic when BookTok – the book side of TikTok – picked up on her queer romance novel, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.

The book, published in 2017, focuses on the love story of two Hollywood actresses despite the titular character’s seven husbands.

In an interview with Time as she appeared on the cover, Reid discussed Evelyn Hugo and writing a queer romance. She said writing the book had led to questions over her personal life.

“I am very private,” she told Time. “So at first, I just sort of let people assume what they were going to assume.”

However, she wanted to be clear that she identifies as bisexual ahead of the release of her next book, Atmosphere, in June.

“It has been hard at times to see people dismiss me as a straight woman,” the author continued. “But I also didn’t tell them the whole story.”

Sharing some of her personal experiences Reid explained that as a teenager she faced questions like, “‘Why can’t you dress more like a girl? Why don’t you do your nails? Why do you talk that way? Can’t you be a little bit quieter?’”

This led to people telling her “‘you’re gay’.” She then fell in love with a woman in her twenties but her friends doubted it at the time.

“This was the late ’90s, so nobody was talking about bisexuality. And if they were, it was to make fun of people. The messages about bisexuality were you just want attention or it was a stop on the way to gayville. I found that very painful, because I was being told that I didn’t know myself, but I did.”

Reid further discussed her sexuality as one room in a house that forms her identity. It was an idea brought to her by her husband, screenwriter Alex Jenkins Reid.

“My attraction to women is a room in the house that is my identity. Alex understood this book was about me spending time in that room. He was so excited for me, like, ‘What a great way for you to express this side of you’.”

Reid’s next book, Atmosphere, astrophysicist Joan Goodwin as she works with NASA in the 1980s where she meets Vanessa Ford, who challenges her sense of self.

It follows on from Reid’s previous works including followed by Daisy Jones & The Six, Malibu Rising, and Carrie Soto is Back.

Reese Witherspoon adapted Daisy Jones for Prime Video and Atmosphere has already been optioned for a movie.

Atmosphere is out on on 3 June 2025.
