Doctor Who writer Russell T Davies has addressed the future of the beloved British sci-fi series following Ncuti Gatwa’s shock exit from the show.
Series 15 – or season two of Davies’ time back at the show’s helm – came to a dramatic end last month, after Ncuti Gatwa, who had starred as the Doctor for Davies’ two seasons, regenerated.
In a jaw-dropping scene in the final episode, entitled “The Reality War”, Gatwa’s Doctor stepped outside the TARDIS as it travelled through space and began his regeneration.
Fans watched as he turned into Rose Tyler, the Doctor’s former companion, played by Billie Piper.
While Gatwa’s departure from the show left many fans severely disappointed, the return of Piper was enough to whet their appetite for the next season.
Now, Davies has shared where the team behind Doctor Who currently stand on future seasons.

Writing in a column for Doctor Who Magazine, Davies confirmed that he isn’t sure what will happen to the show, but is confident that it “will never end”.
“We don’t know what’s happening yet,” he wrote, revealing that he would be taking “a pause” from writing for the magazine “while everyone works out” what will come of the show next.
“Hopefully, we’ll have news soon,” he continued.
“There are pathways leading to potential futures – we’ve still got the mystery of that bright and blazing ending, ‘Oh, hello,’ yes indeed, hello Billie!”
During the lead up to Doctor Who season two, a number of publications reported that the show was to be axed due to low ratings and anger that the series had “gone woke”.
At the time, a BBC spokesperson claimed the story was “incorrect”, adding that a decision on season three would be made after season two airs.
Yet it appears that no decision has been made.

Davies had previously said that there may be a “pause” in production after season two.
Speaking to Newsround in April, he said: “Sometimes there might be a pause, and during that pause, the viewers of Newsround now will grow up a few years and start writing stories and they’ll bring it back.
“So I have absolute faith that that will survive because I am living proof of it and that’s what happens to good ideas. No good idea ever dies.”
Doctor Who is streaming now on BBC iPlayer and Disney+ internationally.
