RuPaul’s Drag Race season 17 runner up quits social media over finale fan reaction

RuPaul’s Drag Race season 17 runner up Jewels Sparkles has taken a break from social media following the reaction from Onya Nurve’s win, saying it ‘breaks her heart’ for the pair to be ‘pit … against each other’ by fans.

After the splashiest season of RuPaul’s Drag Race yet, the Drag Race Hall of Fame has welcomed its newest entrant; the one, and only, Onya Nurve.

Onya beat our her fellow top four competitors in the finale of the season (19 April), with Lexi Love and Sam Star being eliminated in 3rd/ 4th place, and Jewels Sparkles facing off against Onya in the season’s last lip-sync to Lady Gaga’s “Abracadabra”.

And because Jewels is not only a fierce queen but also a queen for the people, the very first thing she posted to X following the results of the finale was a huge congratulations to Onya – but the second was to announce a social media break after slamming ‘fans’ who, “instead of celebrating Onya’s glorious win,” have chosen to focus on the negatives.

“Just hopping on [to X] to say how proud I am of [Onya],” Jewels wrote. “You are an absolute super star and deserve this and the world, I can’t wait to see what you do with this reign sister.”

“IT DO TAKE NURVE BAYBE,” she added. Now that’s how you do a congratulations.

Following up on the first post, Jewels announced that she was “taking a break from [X] again now to preserve [her] mental [health].”

She then warned ‘fans’ of hers that had been attempting to discredit Onya’s win by saying Jewels should have won, writing, “It’s sad that instead of just celebrating Onya’s glorious win, people have to pit us against each other and it breaks my heart actually so I’ll be back when y’all [shut the f**k up].”

Before the pair’s final lip-sync, the finale of Drag Race featured a bespoke number from each of the top four, an appearance from superstar Liza Minnelli, some gagworthy finale looks and a step down for the ages from season 16 winner Nymphia Wind.

With season 17 now wrapped up, you’d think that we’d be in a Drag Race drought – but the mega-cast All Stars 10 is almost here.

Season 17 of RuPaul’s Drag Race is available to stream on WOWPresents Plus internationally.
