Robert De Niro’s trans daughter Airyn responds to coming out reaction

Having only started hormone therapy in November, Airyn De Niro has praised other trans people who have come out and transitioned in more “dangerous” circumstances.

Screen legend Robert De Niro’s 29-year-old daughter recently spoke to Them about her transition and coming out, prompting the Oscar-winning actor to voice his support for her.

Posting a video on Instagram on Friday (2 May), Airyn, who revealed that she’s been “femme-presenting since middle school”, thanked everyone for their love and support. She also mentioned being offered movie roles and opportunities to walk in fashion shows since speaking openly, and chose the moment to address nepotism.

“I’m very flattered and I’m honoured that you would consider me for that,” she said. “I don’t feel I’m deserving of those opportunities, or even of as much praise as I’m getting.”

She went on to say that she recognised the “place of privilege” she comes from “given who my family is”.

@pinknews Robert De Niro’s trans daughter has responded to the support she’s received since sharing her journey. Airyn, 29, opened up about her transition in an interview on Tuesday (29 April). Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, her father said: “I loved and supported Aaron as my son, and now I love and support Airyn as my daughter. I don’t know what the big deal is, I love all my children.” Speaking to Them, Airyn said: “There’s a difference between being visible and being seen. I’ve been visible, I don’t think I’ve been seen yet.” She went on to say that “trans women being honest and open, especially [in] public spaces like social media and getting to see them in their success” made her realise “maybe it’s not too late for me”. And while she recognised that “coming out in of itself is an act of bravery,” especially during the current climate in the US, “There are folks who have it much harder than I do. There are folks who live in areas who have circumstances that are much more dangerous and scary than I do, [but] despite that, still live their truths and come out.

“So, I mean no disrespect to those people who sent me offers, I don’t think I deserve it yet. I’m trying my hardest, I’m still doing auditions, taking lessons, everything like that. But I really want to feel I’ve earned it.”
