Reneé Rapp ‘shades’ Sex Lives of College Girls with new single ‘Leave Me Alone’

Sapphic songstress Reneé Rapp appears to have thrown shade at her former show, The Sex Lives of College Girls, with a pointed line in new single ‘Leave Me Alone’.

Released 21 May, “Leave Me Alone” is the first single from Reneé Rapp’s highly anticipated second album, BITE ME, after her 2023 debut Snow Angel.

The bop is on e big middle finger (with a manicured nail) to authority, with Rapp taking shots at everyone from her manager to an ex-girlfriend, to those iconic press tours that resulted in many people advising the star to never take media training.

But one line has got everybody talking, and it’s the one in which Rapp purrs, “I took my sex life with me, now the show ain’t f**king/ Leave me alone, b*tch, I wanna have fun” – with everyone convinced that the couplet is a sideways swipe at HBO’s The Sex Life of College Girls.

Rapp appeared on the show as lesbian character Leighton Murray for its first two seasons at HBO, announcing before the third season’s release that she would only appear in a handful of episodes.

True to her word, Rapp departed the show in an “unapologetic win” for Leighton in late 2024 and the show was then cancelled just a few moths later, in March – as Rapp would put it, because “the show ain’t f**king” anymore.

According to Deadline, viewership and ratings of the show, which also starred Pauline Chalamet, Amrit Kaur and Alya Chanelle Scott, declined after Rapp’s departure

Fans online have been suitably gagged by the lines, with one writing, “Reneé Rapp ur not real,” above a screenshot of the lyrics.

“‘Took my sex life with me now the show ain’t f*kin’ LMAAOAOAOA,” another laughed.

And a third joked, “If being unhinged was a sport, she’s winning gold lmao.”

Rapp also promoted “Leave Me Alone” before release with a topless Instagram video – in what really was a huge day for lesbians everywhere.

Ms. Reneé Rapp reportedly left the show to focus on her music career, with a lengthy ‘thank you’ to her fans at the time.

College Girls moved me out to LA and introduced me to some of my favourite people,’ thel star wrote in her message. “Two and a half years later – it’s given me y’all and this community. Thank you Mindy, [co-creator] Justin [Noble] and everyone at Max for believing in me.

“A lot of queer work gets belittled but playing Leighton has changed my life. I love who I am 10x more than I did before knowing her. I hope she gave y’all a little bit of that too. She’s such a tiny part of representation but even the tiny parts count.

“I wouldn’t be half the person I am without her and y’all. I love that b***h more than you know. I’m so excited for this season and I can’t wait for you to see what we have coming for her and the girls.”
