Reneé Rapp has opened up about her identity, revealing that labelling herself publicly as a lesbian for the first time felt “euphoric.
The “Tummy Hurts” singer appeared on the Good Hang with Amy Poehler podcast on Wednesday (28 May), where she shared her thoughts about her identity.
Of course, the Mean Girls actress came out as a lesbian whilst appearing as a musical guest on Saturday Night Live last year, after previously identifying publicly as bisexual.
The star recalled her SNL bit alongside Wicked’s Bowen Yang and Saltburn’s Jacob Elordi, in which she was introduced as the “little lesbian intern”. However, she was initially going to be introduced as “a little bisexual intern”.
“At that time, I was very publicly bisexual, I had been for a very long time,” she said on the podcast. “In private, I was talking with my girlfriend and a lot of my friends for the last maybe eight months before that, of being like, ‘I actually don’t really feel very bi at the moment, I feel very much like a lesbian.’
“It feels so nice, and that word feels amazing, and it feels very euphoric for me,” Rapp continued. “I was like, ‘Do you think we could just change it to gay?’
“Labelling yourself publicly is really, really empowering, and also I think can be kind of intimidating. It feels so good for me right now, and I don’t want to go by something that doesn’t feel correct, but I’m also going to give myself the willingness to be [open to change],” she added.
“What if in 10 years I don’t like that identity either? What if in 10 years I’m completely different?”
Elsewhere in the podcast, Rapp opened up about her relationship with her girlfriend Towa Bird. The pair hard-launched their relationship at the Oscars Vanity Fair after-party.
“She was so f***ing mean to me,” Rapp revealed of meeting the musician.
“She’s from the UK, so her humour is super different, but she is also such a b****. She topped a top. She out flirted me,” the star quipped.
