Former Little Mix star and pop icon JADE performed at Mighty Hoopla festival, where she led the crowd in a pro-trans chant that name-dropped author J.K. Rowling.
Jade Thirlwall, now known mononymously as JADE for her already-iconic solo career, took to the stage at South London’s Mighty Hoopla festival on 31 May.
Among a set jam-packed with a Little Mix medley and JADE’s solo bangers – including “Angel of My Dreams”, “FUFN (F**k U For Now)” and “IT Girl” – the fierce LGBTQ+ ally took some time to rally the crowd in Brockwell Park.
Before kicking off “FUFN”, JADE led the crowd in chanting, “F**k You” in response to various items on her ‘F**k you’ list. She mentioned ‘misogynoir’ (the combined force of anti-Black racism and misogyny directed towards Black women), performative allyship, homophobes, transphobes and Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, to all of which the crowd responded with a hearty, “f**k you”.

Rowling is a polarising figure known for her “gender-critical” views on trans people. She recently set up a ‘Women’s fund’ to support “gender-critical” legal cases and celebrated ‘TERF VE Day‘ after the UK Supreme Court settled on the legal definition of a woman as trans-exclusionary.
She also said that she would “happily” go to prison rather than using a trans person’s preferred pronouns.
JADE, by contrast, has always been a vocal LGBTQ+ ally; her debut solo performance outfit at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend proudly featured the colours of the trans flag, and she recently spoke about being unbothered by the “consequences” of being a trans ally.
The former Little Mix star recently officially announced her debut album, THAT’S SHOWBIZ BABY!, and an accompanying tour.
Speaking about her debut offering, JADE saidL: “This album has been years in the making, so I’m beyond excited that I can finally let everyone know when it’s coming out. I’m very proud of THAT’S SHOWBIZ BABY! as a body of work and can’t wait to share it with the world.”
