Patti LuPone recites iconic Drag Race quotes in legendary GLAAD Awards speech: ‘Not today Satan!’

It’s official: Broadway legend and beloved LGBTQ+ ally Patti LuPone is also a major RuPaul’s Drag Race fan.

The three-time Tony Award-winning actress was in attendance at last night’s 36th Annual GLAAD Media Awards (27 March), alongside her Agatha All Along co-stars Joe Locke and Sasheer Zamata, and the series’ showrunner, Jac Schaeffer.

The hit Marvel series and WandaVision spin-off series won the Outstanding New Series accolade at the GLAAD awards ceremony, which celebrates LGBTQ+ visibility and progress in media.

Yet aside from taking to the stage to collect the gong, actress and noted Donald Trump hater LuPone took a moment to pay homage to some queer trailblazers.

“I can no longer accept the things I cannot change. I am changing the things I cannot accept,” she recited, quoting lesbian feminist activist Angela Davis.

“Coming out is the most political thing you can do,” she continued, referencing Harvey Milk, the first out gay man elected to US public office.

Then, things took a hilarious turn for the draggy.

In her most histrionic voice, she trilled: “You’re perfect. You’re beautiful. You look like Linda Evangilista – Aja.”

As the crowd realised that she was quoting the Drag Race season nine star’s iconic Untucked row with Valentina, they broke out into cheers and applause. LuPone didn’t stop there though.

“Let me ask you a question. What do you do successfully? – Bianca Del Rio. F**K MY DRAG, RIGHT? – Kennedy Davenport. Backrolls?! – Alyssa Edwards.”

She went on to mimic legendary quotes from other Drag Race stars including Trixie Mattel, Plane Jane, and Latrice Royale.

She rounded off with one of the OG Drag Race quotes to infiltrate mainstream culture: Bianca Del Rio’s “Not today, Satan. Not today!”

Responding to Lupone’s homage, Aja wrote on Instagram: “Omg I’m gagging!!!!! You’re a modelllll.”

Bianca Del Rio and Latrice Royale also reshared the video on their social media.

As RuPaul famously says, if you can’t love Patti LuPone, how the hell you gonna love somebody else?

Other winners at the 36th annual GLAAD Media Awards included Fox’s 9-1-1: Lone Star in the Outstanding Drama Series category, Baby Reindeer in the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series category, and RuPaul’s Drag Race in the Outstanding Reality Series – Competition category.

Will & Harper won the Outstanding Documentary accolade, while Heartstopper won the Outstanding Kids & Family Programming or Film – Live Action award.

Queer rapper Doechii was named this year’s Outstanding Music Artist, following in the footsteps of last year’s winner, Reneé Rapp. See the full list of GLAAD Media Award winners here.
