Matt Bomer wanted to ‘experience joy’ with Mid-Century Modern role: ‘People need to laugh right now’

Matt Bomer has reflected on his need to “experience joy” with his latest role in the new sitcom Mid-Century Modern, given the state of affairs in the US.

Mid-Century Modern, which stars queer legends Nathan Lane and Nathan Lee Graham alongside Bomer, follows three friends – billed as gay gentlemen of a certain age. After the unexpected death of a friend, the trio decide to spend their golden years living together in Palm Springs.

Fans were recently gifted a first look at the new sitcom at the beginning of March, ahead of the series’ release date. And during the series press run, Fellow Travelers’ Bomer has highlighted the audience’s “need to laugh right now” due to the political climate in America.

While President Donald Trump’s slew of executive orders have targeted the LGBTQ+ community in particular, Bomer’s new series is not shy on spreading queer joy.

When asked by Today’s Richard Wilkins about “whether the gags were landing” with the studio audience, Bomer responded: “It’s true, and I think we all realised early on that people need to laugh right now.

“I wanted to be [in] a comedy and experience joy on the set and I think once we started filming in front of an audience, we realised that other people — especially in this country right now — really need to laugh.

“I’ve gone down a lot of dark pathways in the roles in my career in the past decade. I’ve explored a lot of repression and grief and trauma,” he added.

“So when this opportunity came around I thought, ‘You know what? To get to work with Nathan Lane and Ryan Murphy and this cast and these creatives and these writers and come to work and laugh and try to make other folks laugh,’ that was really appealing to me.”

Mid-Century Modern is available to stream now on Hulu in the US and Disney+ in the UK and Australia.
