Marvel’s Ironheart just introduced one of the most powerful villains in MCU history

Marvel TV series Ironheart, fronted by Dominique Thorne as RiRi Williams, has just introduced one of the biggest bads the MCU has ever seen – Mephisto.

Warning: Superpowered spoilers for Ironheart follow.

We know, we’re gagged too.

But to recap, the latest TV series from Marvel follows RiRi Williams as the spiritual successor to Iron Man, and co-stars Anthony Ramos as the mystical Hood, RuPaul’s Drag Race legend Shea Couleé as Slug, Zoe Terakes as the first out trans actor in the MCU and more.

After being kicked out of college, RiRi is caught up with some bad apples, joining a gang of Robin Hood-esque miscreants who take from the rich to alleviate pressure from the poor (and give to themselves).

A few mishaps later (putting it lightly), and Parker/ Hood, who has been imbued with dark and magical powers by a mysterious entity, eventually goes toe-to-iron-toe with RiRi after the pair’s, shall we say, differences, come to the fore.

A big bust up later and the maybe-queer-probably-not RiRi is suddenly somewhere else; she’s sat opposite Sacha Baren Cohen in the same slightly sinister restaurant that the Hood made a deal with him, who turns out to be… Mephisto.

RiRi makes a surprising deal with Mephisto, who offers her whatever she truly wants for a price she “won’t even miss”. What she wants, it turns out, is her dead best friend back, who Mephisto readily resurrects, but in typical Marvel cliffhanger fashion, we’re left to wonder at what cost?

Natalie is back – but so is Mephisto. And that’s bad.

Who is Mephisto?

Played by Sacha Baren Cohen in Marvel’s Ironheart – and presumably any other upcoming projects – Mephisto is a very very bad guy from the depths of Marvel’s comic book history.

A powerful demon and ruler of a hellish dimension in the comics, Mephisto (short for Mephistopheles) is known for manipulating souls and altering reality to serve his own dark agenda, and is often tied to the magical aspects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – like RiRi’s magic-imbued suit of armour in Ironheart.

Mephisto is known to have superhuman physical attributes, can shape and sizeshift, project illusions, manipulate memories, and alter time and reality. Viewers have noticed that in a shot from episode 6, Mephisto’s reflection in a spoon is very much more Devil-like.

He often serves as a major antagonist in supernatural and multiverse-related storylines, and was first expected to be introduced way back in 2021 in Marvel’s WandaVision.

When he failed to materialise there, fans thought he would pop up in 2024’s Agatha All Along, but they were again left hanging.

Now that Mephisto is officially in the Marvel Cinematic Universe via the Ironheart finale – and that RiRi made that shady deal with him, there’s sure to be more magical mayhe. ahead.

All Ironheart episodes are available to stream on Disney +.
