Major British city in the running to host EuroPride 2028

The contenders to host EuroPride 2028 include a British city that’s popular with the LGBTQ+ community.

Two bids have been confirmed to be in the running to host one of Europe’s biggest LGBTQ+ events, in four years’ time. Manchester, which hosted EuroPride in 2003, will go head-to-head with the West of Ireland, The Outing Festival, Quare Clare and Limerick Pride having joined forces to make the bid possible.

Patrick Orth, the president of the European Pride Organisers Association (EPOA), said: “The high velocity of political change across Europe is making EuroPride even more important for our community to come together and keep pressing for change.

“The political shifts in the UK and Ireland are no less profound, so it is exciting to have bids from both countries to centre their LGBTQIA+ communities in European consciousness. I look forward to seeing their ambitions in their full bid later this year.”

Manchester Pride chief executive Mark Fletcher agreed with Orth’s message, saying: “Hosting EuroPride 2028 in Manchester will send a clear message. Our communities will not be silenced, erased or pushed back into the shadows.

“EuroPride 2028 in Manchester would be a bold, unapologetic celebration of LGBTQIA+ joy, creativity and resilience, bringing us together in solidarity of the Pride movement to protest, party and campaign for change.

“It is a crucial time for the progression of LGBQTIA+ rights and we are calling on our neighbours for support. Together we are stronger.”

Eddie McGuinness, a spokesperson for the Irish bid, said: “Hosting EuroPride 2028 would be a historic milestone, celebrating love, diversity and acceptance against the stunning backdrop of the Wild Atlantic Way. This event would highlight the island of Ireland’s welcoming nature and extend Pride in Our Community”.

Both teams’ bids will be published in August and presented at the EPOA’s annual conference in Barcelona in October. The winner is expected to be announced on 11 October.

Next year EuroPride, which began in London in 1992, will run alongside WorldPride, in Amsterdam. The following year it will take place in the Italian city of Turin
