Lizzo’s make powerful display of trans allyship at Pride: ‘We ain’t free til we all free’

Pop icon Lizzo has delivered an impassioned speech supporting trans women while headlining a Pride festival.

Proving once again that she’s a true champion of LGBTQ+ rights, Lizzo delivered a powerful speech in support of Black trans women as she headlined OUTLOUD’s LGBTQIA+ Pride festival in West Hollywood Park.

Taking to the stage on Saturday (31 June), she said: “This is dedicated to you and more importantly the Black trans women who, without their fight, we would not be able to celebrate today.”

The “Juice” hitmaker continued: “And we still in some s**t, right? But hopefully one day, beyond this motherf***ing rainbow bi**h, we will see a place where we no longer have to fight to exist. This is for you.”

Lizzo then performed a rendition  of the 1939 Wizard of Oz classic, “Over the Rainbow”.

‘We ain’t free till we all free’

She posted the speech to Instagram with the captioned: “Happy Pride to the beautiful LGBTQIA+ community. As this month begins let us remember there would be no pride without the black trans women & trans women of color who fought against the systems that tried to erase them.

“In honor of that fight we have to continue to take a stand against that very same system that threatens our rights to bodily autonomy and liberation. We ain’t free till we all free. I love you.”

Lizzo’s speech comes as amid a continued attempt by the Trump administration to erase trans people from public records and to repeal any federal protections relating to trans or non-binary citizens.

In January, US president Donald Trump signed an executive order proclaiming that the US government only recognises two sexes – male and female.

Since then, public agencies across the US have begun implementing policies which systematically erase any mention of trans people from official documents or public records.

It isn’t the first time Lizzo has used her platform to speak out in support of  the LGBTQ+ community. In 2023, Lizzo blasted Nebraska’s anti-trans and anti-choice legislation in a beautiful speech. Despite being urged to cancel her Tennessee tour date by fans, Lizzo took to the stage in a joyful act of resistance with a glittering host of RuPaul’s Drag Race alumni and local drag queens.
