Kite Runner author Khaled Hosseini proudly introduces his trans daughter to the world

Award-winning author Khaled Hosseini shared his support for his daughter after she came out as transgender in a heart-warming message.

The Kite Runner author shared his happiness on Wednesday (13 July), while also addressing the hardships that trans people face on a daily basis.

“Yesterday, my daughter Haris came out as transgender,” he wrote on Twitter. “I’ve never been prouder of her. She has taught our family so much about bravery and truth. I know this process was painful for her. She is sober to the cruelty trans people are subjected to. But she is strong and undaunted.”

He then posted a picture of him with his daughter as a toddler, saying: “I love my daughter. She is beautiful, wise, brilliant. I will be by her side every step of the way. Our family stands behind her.”

Fans applauded the declaration of support from the writer, with some saying that to have a trans child is a “gift” and a “privilege.”

“The way my trans son just busted my world wide open still takes my breath away. What a privilege, how lucky we are to be parents to trans kids,” one said. “Big love to you and your daughter!”

There are a lot of cis allies out there despite the vitriolic press. Having you, a supportive accepting father is invaluable.

Khaled Hosseini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan in 1965. His father’s job as a diplomat for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs forced them to move to Iron in the 70s where he stayed for three years. After the Soviet-Afghan War began in the 1980s, his family sought political asylum in San Jose, California.

He would eventually write his first novel in 2003 – The Kite Runner. The book was a major commercial success, becoming one of the best-selling novels of 2005 in the United States. It would eventually be adapted into film in 2007. He would go on to publish his second novel in the same year.
