Harry Potter TV series confirms key cast members set to play Hagrid, Snape and more

The upcoming Harry Potter TV series has now confirmed who will be playing the key members of staff at Hogwarts.

In an announcement on Monday (14 April), HBO confirmed previous reports surrounding the characters of Professors Albus Dumbledore, Minerva McGonagall, Severus Snape, Quirinus Quirrel, Rubeus Hagrid and Argus Filch.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, Oscar-nominee John Lithgow will take on the role of the Hogwarts headmaster. Meanwhile, Ozark‘s Janet McTeer will play McGonagall, the transfiguration teacher.

Paapa Essiedu will play Snape, the potions master while Luke Thallon will play Quirrel, the stammering Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher.

The role of the Hogwarts Gamekeeper has gone to Hot Fuzz‘s Nick Frost, while Paul Whitehouse will play caretaker Filch.

The remake of the Harry Potter series is being led by writer and showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director and executive producer Mark Mylod. “We’re delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard, and we can’t wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life,” the pair has said of the confirmed cast.

There’s currently no word on who will play the series’ main young trio: Previous reports have stated that around 32,000 children have auditioned for the key roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione.

The HBO series is slated for release in 2026 with each of JK Rowling’s seven books getting its own season. The adaptation is reportedly due to run on TV for over a decade.

A series version of Harry Potter has proved controversial since being announced in 2023. Some have argued that with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II only coming out in 2011 it’s too soon for a remake, while others have fallen out of love with the series due to its creator’s views on the transgender community.

HBO’s response to those concerns has been to say that Rowling has “a right to express her personal views”. A spokesperson told Variety last year the series “will only benefit from her involvement.”

HBO CEO Casey Bloys has also previously addressed this point, saying he’s “totally comfortable with it” and “not worried” about the backlash.
