Fire Island director Andrew Ahn says a sequel would ‘be like And Just Like That’ but ‘gayer’

Fire Island director Andrew Ahn has addressed a potential reboot for the queer rom-com, quipping that it would take inspiration from Sex and The City’s And Just Like That… “but gayer”.

The 2022 film – which received critical acclaim for its representation and celebration of queer culture – featured Conrad Ricamora, Joel Kim Booster and Bowen Yang, with Booster and Yang playing two best friends embarking on their annual weeklong trip to the popular gay vacation spot.

When they arrive at their holiday spot, Noah’s best friend Howie (Yang) falls – both metaphorically and literally – for a handsome doctor, played by You’s James Scully.

This leads Noah and Howie to meet the doctor’s group of friends, including a Mr Darcy figure played by How to Get Away with Murder’s Ricamora, who soon begins to clash with Noah’s Elizabeth Bennet-esque character.

In a recent interview with the cast and crew of the Pride and Prejudice-inspired film, director Andrew Ahn confirmed that “there’s always been conversation about doing a sequel”.

“I don’t know if a real concrete idea has been formed yet, but there are things in the ether, Ahn told Entertainment Weekly, explaining that Booster “always jokes that it’s going to be like the Sex and the City reboot And Just Like That, where it’s 30 years later and they’re older and gayer”.

“We’ll see what happens,” Ahn said.

This isn’t the first time that a follow-up to the film has been discussed. Last year, Ricamora teased a potential sequel, including a potential follow-up plot.

Speaking to Out, Ricamora said: “We’re on a group thread all the time and spitballing, like, ‘Joel [Kim Booster], hurry, write something’. It was the best time hanging out with all those guys, and I hope to get to do it again.”
