The world within The Last of Us is one ravaged by violence and fear, but it appears that love still finds a way to bloom even amid Ellie’s grief.
(Warning, this article contains major spoilers for The Last of Us season two).
Episode three gives fans a tender glimpse of Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Dina’s (Isabela Merced) connection deepening, as they discussed their kiss at the New Year’s Eve party in episode one.
In the most recent episode, Dina helps Ellie set out to Seattle so that she can avenge Joel (Pedro Pascal) after his devastating death last week.
Towards the end of the episode, the pair sleep next to each other in a tent, leading to Dina bringing up the kiss. Ellie dismisses it at first because she don’t want to assume any deeper meaning from Dina, but Dina suggests that she did genuinely want to kiss Ellie: it wasn’t just the fact she was high making her act that way.
Dina asks Ellie her to rate the kiss on a scale from 1 to 10. After Ellie gives it a “6,” the conversation shifts away.
It’s hard to say what’s next for the pair or if we’ll get any more intimate scenes between them soon, but fans have high hopes – especially after Merced said that “the gays are going to be fed” this season.
Speaking to IMDB, she said: “Bella’s extremely charming. Our chemistry is sort of undeniable, and the gays are going to be fed. Like, they’re going to be so happy. I love it.”
But, Ellie has been keeping a secret from Dina, and that could cause issues down the line. During the episode, Ellie ducks one question from Dina, “who was the first person you killed?” declaring its answer “too f**ked-up.”
Who was the first person Ellie killed?
Ellie’s reluctance to open up to Dina makes sense once you know what she’s been through.
Underneath her tough exterior is a teenager who’s experienced unimaginable pain — and her first kill wasn’t a stranger, but someone she loved.
Ellie’s first kill was Riley, her best friend and her first love.
The two shared a beautiful, fleeting night together in an abandoned mall but that night ended in tragedy: both were bitten by infected, and while Ellie survived due to her mysterious immunity, Riley wasn’t so lucky.
Ellie was then forced to kill Riley and has been carrying that guilt with her ever since, meaning she’s probably terrified to get herself hurt or hurt someone else she cares about.
Who are the Seraphites?
As if navigating young love wasn’t enough, there’s another threat lurking in the shadows, who we’re introduced to this week: the Seraphites.
The Seraphites — also known as “Scars” due to their ritualistic facial markings stemming from an initiation ritual for new members — are a fanatical, cult-like group who have rejected modern life and worship a long-dead prophet.
Their brutal worldview demands absolute obedience, and they view outsiders as enemies to be destroyed.
