Comedian Trevor Noah has found himself facing the wrath of President Donald Trump after making a joke about Jeffrey Epstein at last night’s (Sunday 1 February) Grammy Awards.
Noah hosted the annual music awards ceremony for the sixth and final time on Sunday night. Among the big winners were Bad Bunny, Kendrick Lamar, and Billie Eilish, with many other LGBTQ+ highlights.
But one moment has captured the attention of the man sitting in the Oval Office more than anything else and, of course, it revolves around him. It came after Billie Eilish and her brother, Finneas, accepted the award for song of the Year for “Wildflower”.
As the camera cut back to Noah, clearly enjoying his final time as host, he said: “Song of the Year, congrats Billie Eilish. Wow! That is a Grammy that every artist wants almost as much as Trump wants Greenland, which makes sense because Epstein’s island [Little St James] is gone, he needs a new one to hang out with Bill Clinton.”
And it wasn’t long until Trump replied. Posting on Truth Social the US President wrote: “Noah said, INCORRECTLY about me, that Donald Trump and Bill Clinton spent time on Epstein Island. WRONG!!!”
He continued: “I can’t speak for Bill, but I have never been to Epstein Island, nor anywhere close, and until tonight’s false and defamatory statement, have never been accused of being there, not even by the Fake News Media,” as reported by the BBC.
“Noah, a total loser, better get his facts straight, and get them straight fast,” he added. “Get ready Noah, I’m going to have some fun with you!”
Trump did associate with Epstein dating back to the 1980s though the President has claimed the two fell out around 2004. There’s also no proof he ever visited the late financier’s island, Trump saying last year he turned down the “privilege” of going.
Clinton has also said he’s never been to the island. Neither man has faced accusations of wrongdoing in connection with Epstein.
Epstein bought Little St James which is located in the US Virgin Islands in 1998. The financier and sex offender died while in federal custody and awaiting trial on federal sex-trafficking charges, with his death ruled a suicide. He had previously pleaded guilty to soliciting prostitution from a minor in 2008.
Trump’s sensitivity over the Epstein files has come up multiple times in recent months. In November, Trump said the US news outlet ABC’s licence should be taken away after being asked about the Epstein files. That followed him snapping at a Bloomberg reporter after being asked a different question about the files.
Trump has also said he had “nothing to do with Jeffrey Epstein”.
