Cynthia Nixon throws epic shade at old rival, disgraced ex-governor Andrew Cuomo

Cynthia Nixon has read disgraced ex-governor Andrew Cuomo to filth in the best possible way.

The Sex and the City actor famously tried to unseat Cuomo as New York governor in 2018, ultimately losing to the incumbent in the Democratic primary.

Cuomo went on to win re-election. However, his time in office came to a dramatic end on Tuesday (24 August) after an attorney general report found he had sexually harassed 11 women while in office. He has denied the allegations, but resigned amid public pressure.

On Cuomo’s final day in office, Nixon tweeted: “The difference between me and Andrew Cuomo? Neither of us is governor, but I still have my Emmy(s).”

Disgraced ex-governor Andrew Cuomo has been stripped of an honorary Emmy

The Ratched star’s tweet was in reference to the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ decision to award Cuomo an honorary Emmy in 2020 for his televised coronavirus briefings.

Writing in a press release at the time, the Academy said it had chosen to recognise Cuomo’s “masterful use of television to inform and calm people around the world”.

But Cuomo’s Emmy-winner status was short lived. On Tuesday (24 August), as he bowed out of office, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced that it was rescinding his award.

“His name and any reference to his receiving the award will be eliminated from the International Academy materials going forward,” the Academy said in a statement.

Nixon, on the other hand, remains a two-time Emmy winner. She won the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy in 2004 for her iconic Sex and the City performance, and she won the Best Guest Actress in a Drama award in 2008 for a role in Law & Order: SVU. She’s also won two Tony Awards and a Grammy.

Andrew Cuomo was found to have violated state and federal laws

Cynthia Nixon’s comments come just weeks after an investigative report from the attorney general’s office detailed a laundry list of allegations against Andrew Cuomo.

The damning report found that Cuomo had sexually harassed 11 women while also violating state and federal laws.

Cuomo has repeatedly denied the allegations against him, but he eventually bowed to pressure and announced that he would be leaving his role as governor of New York earlier this month.

“The best way I can help now is if I step aside and let government get back to government,” Cuomo said at a press conference on 10 August.
