Celebrity Big Brother viewers name Chris Hughes ‘Ally of the Year’ for reaction to Mickey Rourke’s ‘homophobic’ language against Jojo Siwa

Former Love Island star Chris Hughes has been praised by Celebrity Big Brother viewers over his reaction to Mickey Rourke’s ‘homophobic’ language towards Jojo Siwa.

Hollywood legend Rourke was given a formal warning by Big Brother on last night’s episode of Celebrity Big Brother, after he made a joke about and to former Dance Moms star using the f slur, and intimated that he could turn her straight.

Siwa, who is a lesbian, is currently in a relationship with actor and DJ Kath Ebbs; in scenes that aired 9 April, Rourke asked the “Karma” singer whether she “likes girls or boys”, to which she responded: “Me? Girls. My partner is non-binary.”

Rourke then grimly replied, “If I stay longer than four days, you won’t be gay anymore,” to which Siwa countered, “I can guarantee I’ll still be gay and I’ll still be in a very happy relationship.”

As the group then sat in the garden, Rourke told Chris Hughes, who first shot to fame on the third season of Love Island in 2017, that he would try to “vote the lesbian out.”

“That’s homophobic, if that was your reasoning,” Siwa replied from across the garden.

“You can’t do that, Mickey,” Hughes warned before Rourke then said he “need[ed] a fag”, before gesturing towards Siwa and saying, “I’m not talking to you.”

Rourke was then called to the Diary Room for his formal warning, but not before Hughes repeated, “You can’t say that, Mickey. You can’t say that.”

Hughes then comforted Siwa, who thanked him, with the Love Island star saying, “You can’t justify it because it’s not right. You can’t try and justify things that aren’t right” – and viewers of the series have also praised Hughes for his reaction to the scene, naming him “LGBT Ally of the Year 2025.”

“If you say a slur 3 times in the mirror at 12am chris hughes will appear and reprimand you,” one joked, with another writing, “Chris Hughes I have always known you’re a down ass bitch.”

A more serious viewer wrote of the Celebrity Big Brother episode, “I have gained a massive amount of respect for Chris Hughes after that clip. It takes a lot for a man to tell another, older (richer & more famous) man that he’s out of line. So many people chalk it up to a ‘different generation’ and laugh it off, but he told him straight.”

“Chris Hughes and Jojo Siwa is the friendship I never knew I needed,” another added, with yet another joking, “Chris Hughes threw the first brick at Stonewall.”

Other celebs in the house include former Olympian Daley Thompson, Drag Race UK winner Danny Beard and bisexual Tory MP Sir Michael Fabricant.

Celebrity Big Brother, hosted by Will Best and AJ Odudu, is available to stream on ITVX. Live shows air Sunday to Friday at 9pm on ITV1 in the UK.
