Queer actress Ariana DeBose has apologised after deleting a post that appeared to criticise Snow White star Rachel Zegler amid backlash to the film.
DeBose, who made history in 2022 by becoming the first out queer woman of colour to win an Oscar for her performance in West Side Story, has apologised after deleting a post that seemed to criticise Zeglar.
The post, which cited a statement made by Jonah Platt, the son of Snow White producer Marc Platt, read: “Narcissism is not something to be coddled or encouraged.”
The live-action Snow White film, in which Zegler stars as the lead, has faced backlash, primarily due to her comments about the 1937 classic. Zegler criticised the film’s original portrayal of romance, stating that Snow White would not be “saved by the prince”. Additionally, the decision to move away from the traditional depiction of the seven dwarfs has sparked controversy. As a result, the film has received a dismal 1.6 out of 10 rating on IMDb.
Platt’s post was in response to Zegler, a self-proclaimed narcissist, who had posted in support of a free Palestine. However, Platt claimed that her political statement detracted from the film’s promotion.

DeBose, who starred alongside Zegler in Steven Spielberg’s 2021 West Side Story, faced backlash after reposting the quote, leading her to delete it and issue an apology.
‘Next time, I’ll be sure to clarify its origins first’
She wrote on Instagram Story: “I post quotes all the time and thought this one was meaningful. Will fully cop to the fact that I did not do any research on where this quote came from, nor did I know of the connection until it was pointed out to me.”
DeBose noted that this isn’t the first—nor will it be the last—time she posts about narcissism. However, she added, “Next time, I’ll be sure to clarify its origins first.”
At the start of the year, Zelger reacted to a claim that she’s romantically “obsessed” with her co-star Kit Connor, who also plays Nick Nelson in hit LGBTQ+ Netflix series Heartstopper, firmly stating that she is not.
