Alan Cumming ‘accidentally’ lets slip secret detail about Avengers: Doomsday

Queer star Alan Cumming has – seemingly accidentally – given us a hint at what we can expect from Avengers: Doomsday.

It was revealed in March that Cumming would appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film, in which MCU characters will team up with those from the X-Men and upcoming Fantastic Four movies, to combat a new threat.

Cumming played teleporter Nightcrawler/Kurt Wagner in 2003’s X2 but didn’t appear in any of the subsequent films. Among those joining him in Doomsday are Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, James Marsden as Cyclops, and Rebecca Romijn, who will play Mystique.

In an interview with Buzzfeed UK recently, Cumming touched on X2 as an example of a time he couldn’t believe he was a part of a film. On returning to the role, he said: “I’ve been learning stunts for some fight scene. I’m 60 years old, 23 years ago I played that superhero. I was kind of old for a superhero even then, and I’m back doing it. That, to me, is hilarious.”

He then shared a bit of tea from the Doomsday set that is sure to have the Marvel head honchos in a tizzy. “I’m sort of learning these fights and I’m like, what, who am I fighting with?…you’re hitting Pedro Pascal.”

The Last of Us star Pascal will be playing Mister Fantastic/Reed Richards in both Doomsday and the soon-to-be-seen Fantastic Four: First Steps.

Little is known about the plot in Doomsday, with Marvel bosses being even more secretive than usual – if that’s possible.

So, Cumming’s snippet of information is likely to be pounced upon, and endlessly discussed by fans, impatient for the 2026 release. Although we can’t say who will come off better in a fight between Nightcrawler and Mister Fantastic, we’d certainly not like to see Cumming and Pascal fight in real life!

The cast for Avengers: Doomsday also includes Chris Hemsworth, reprising his role as Thor, Stranger Things star David Harbour, returning as Alexei Shostakov, a role he can be seen in right now in Thunderbolts*, and Robert Downey Jnr, turning bad guy as Victor von Doom.

Avengers: Doomsday is due in cinemas in May 2026. Fantastic Four: First Steps is set to open in the US and UK in July.
