Yes, Baldur’s Gate 3 actor is aware of all your ‘filthy’ Karlach fan fiction

Yes, the voice actor for Baldur’s Gate 3’s Karlach is aware of all your “filthy” fan-fictions about her, and no, she doesn’t read them.

British voice actor, Samantha Beart, admitted that she was aware how thirsty the fanbase had become for the Zariel Tiefling companion, whom she voices in the hit 2023 fantasy role-playing game.

The demon-like warrior is a recruitable companion given a new chance at life after being freed from a decades-long war she was forced to engage in. A romancable character, the muscular barbarian has quickly become a fan-favourite amongst thirsty Baldur’s Gate 3 fans.

Beart said that she knew about “all the filthy things people write” featuring Karlach on fan-fiction and community sites, joking that she is aware “because I’m a person and I am on the internet.”

According to the website Archive Of Our Own (AO3), there are over 39,700 fan-fiction stories written about the Baldur’s Gate series of video games, 15,306 of which are labelled as “explicit”. Nearly 8,200 of all stories feature Karlach, while 2,845 “explicit” stories feature the character.

Speaking to PCGamer, the 40-year-old voice actor said she hasn’t read any of the content featuring Karlach, but was “aware” of how prolific it is.

She admitted that she was positively overwhelmed by the extent of the “fan passion” for Baldur’s Gate 3, raunchy or otherwise, saying it has been “completely life-changing.”

“The fact that it wasn’t really an official marketing campaign in the way that other Triple-A usually get; it was never on the side of a bus or on the tube or anything,” she said. “But my hairdresser – who doesn’t play [Baldur’s Gate 3], is single, no kids – knows about Baldur’s Gate.

While Karlach is certainly a top-contender for fan-favourite amongst Baldur’s Gate 3’s thirstiest fans, she hasn’t hit the top spot. The fantasy game’s very own gay vampire, Astarion, has seen a whopping 22,792 stories written about him by fans, with over 14,600 of those stories labelled as explicit or mature.

The sheer volume of thirst for the character is so much that it has spilled over to other game after a modification for the cosy farming game Stardew Valley introduced Astarion as a romanceable character.
