Warning: major spoilers ahead for The White Lotus season 3 finale.
Season 3 of The White Lotus ended with a jaw-dropping finale in which the characters Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood) and Rick (Walton Goggins) tragically died in a shootout.
Earlier in the episode, Rick told Chelsea that he saw them spending the rest of their lives together – making this ending all the more bittersweet.
Posting on Instagram, Walton Goggins paid tribute to the relationship between his character and Chelsea now that the whole world knows that they sadly die at the end of the show.
He wrote: “Rick + Chelsea. With the heaviest of hearts… To me, ours was a love story. It was only ever a love story, hindered by unresolved, childhood trauma. We all have them… but can we move past them.”
“In the depths of our despair there is always beauty around us. If we can sit with our pain, just sit with it… not react… not be defined by it…It’s there… the love the world is constantly giving in any given moment is there. Always waiting for us to see it… Trust me I know.”
Walton Goggins went on to thank White Lotus creator and showrunner Mike White in the viral Instagram post for his “imagination” and for giving Goggins and Wood “the opportunity to tell [this story]”.
“Thank you Aimee Lou [Wood] for being my partner… a journey I will never forget,” he added, also thanking other members of the cast and crew.
Previously, Wood told The Hollywood Reporter that the finale made her “f***ing sob” but described the episode as filled with “a lot of hope” and “a lot of softness”.
“All of the connections, the way the ladies connect with each other and the way the family did, I found it incredibly uncynical, especially for The White Lotus. It was very, very, very moving,” she explained.
“This whole time I’ve been so sad… like Mike [White] kills hope! Because Chelsea is hope and he kills her. But that’s life isn’t it? It’s love and pain all the time.”
