The White Lotus icon Natasha Rothwell says she will ‘die’ for the LGBTQ+ community: ‘No one is free until we’re all free’

Natasha Rothwell has pledged her support for the LGBTQ+ community amid a barrage of political attacks against transgender people in the United States.

The American actress, who is currently starring as spa manager Belinda Lindsey in season three of Mike White’s controversial black comedy drama The White Lotus, said that she will “ride and die” for the queer community.

She spoke on the red carpet of the 36th annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles last night (27 March) to affirm her support.

“The LGBTQIA+ community is under attack right now and as an ally I truly believe that no one is free until we’re all free,” she urged.

“I ride for this community, I will die for this community, and so to be here is to let everyone know that regardless of what the circumstances are outside of this venue, they have my support and I will fight for them.”

Natasha Rothwell didn’t mention US president Donald Trump by name, but it’s likely she was alluding to his administration’s numerous political attacks against the transgender community.

Since he re-entered the White House back in January, he has signed executive orders aimed at blocking trans people from serving in the US military and competing in sports competitions in categories that align with their gender identity.

He has also signed an order recognising only “two sexes” – male and female – and pledged to strip healthcare providers of federal funding should they continue providing gender-affirming healthcare to under 19-year-olds.

The majority of Trump’s trans bans are currently in flux, as they are being challenged by judges across the US.

Two-time Emmy Award nominee Rothwell has made it plainly clear that she is no fan of the two-time impeached president. Every single day, she dedicates a moment of her time to sending a message to him directly on X/Twitter that simply reads: “You are trash.”

In recent days, she has amended her post to include a portrait of Trump that he himself has dubbed “truly the worst”.

It’s unsurprising that Rothwell has promised that the LGBTQ+ community has her back, as a huge portion of The White Lotus’ fanbase are queer.

In February, she spoke to PinkNews about why queer folk might love and resonate with the show so much.

“I wouldn’t even dare to speculate,” she laughed. “I think that there’s something about just the glamour of The White Lotus, from the hair and makeup and the wardrobe. I think that there’s something so aesthetically beautiful about the show.”

She continued: “There is a little something about the characters. I think that they’re also really f**ked up characters. And I mean, I don’t want to be presumptuous, but I feel like the LGBT community likes drama, might like a little mess. So I think that might be it… It’s camp as hell.”

The White Lotus previously won the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series accolade at the GLAAD Media Awards in 2023.

At last night’s GLAAD Awards, Trump’s targeting of the trans community was a hot talking point.

After being awarded the Outstanding Music Artist accolade, queer rap star Doechii said that she was “disgusted” by the attacks in her impassioned acceptance speech.

“[GLAAD] founded on the principles of acceptance, inclusiveness and empowerment and those are the same things that I strongly believe in and advocate for and that continue to propel me forward,” she shared.

“Especially now that hard won cultural change and rights for transgender people and the LGBTQ+ community have been threatened, and I’m disgusted. Disgusted. I want to say that we are here and we are not going anywhere.”
