The Sims 4 gets even gayer with surprise content update

Somehow, Electronic Arts (EA) have managed to make The Sims 4 even gayer with its latest Pride-themed content update.

The beloved life-simulation game has received a new set of Pride-themed items as part of a free content update announced on Wednesday (2 April).

Complete with a quick 30-second trailer showcasing a variety of new Pride-themed make-up looks, clothing, and furniture, the “Burst of Pride” content update, developers say, is just “one of the free content releases coming this year.”

Players can now decorate their homes with Pride-themed wall hangings and furniture items, including a “Burst of Pride” double-bed and the “Pride Rocks!” collage, while decking their Sims out with a colourful cavalcade of Pride-themed shoes, leggings, tops, and more.

Each item comes with alternate styles designed after several Pride flags, including the trans, lesbian, gay, non-binary, genderqueer, and asexual flags.

Pride flags themselves have finally been added to the game as decorations, too, with a variety of types to choose from, including knitted wallhangings, collages, and, of course, the flags themselves.

The content update is available now for all players of The Sims 4 and is completely free, according to EA Games.

While The Sims franchise has had a well-documented queer history, featuring same-sex romance since its the first game released in 2000, developer Maxis has been stepping things up a notch with near-yearly updates that make the game more queer friendly.

The Lovestruck expansion pack, released in 2024 at the cost of $39.99 (£31.50), featured a variety of gameplay expansions that introduced new intimate interactions between Sims, including non-monogamy and a fictional dating app mechanic.

Players can also show their “swoon-worthy” side in the pack’s newest neighbourhood, Ciudad Enamorada, as well as with a variety of furniture items, such as a heart-shaped bed.

In 2023, developers padded out the game’s options for trans Sims in a free content update, which included character customisation options such as top-surgery scars, chest binders, and shapewear.

Queer fans can’t stop winning with The Sims 4, it seems, with fans celebrating the series’ unapologetic Pride.

“While everyone’s becoming conservative, The Sims is becoming gayer and that’s why I’ll always love this franchise,” a user wrote in response to the trailer.

Another wrote: “I know people despise rainbow capitalism, but with the state of things, I think it’s really nice that The Sims is releasing free Pride content.”
