The Last of Us viewers are distraught by this change to its intro: ‘I’m gonna vomit’

HBO’s live action adaptation of the 2020 video game The Last Of Us Part II has changed its intro for episode three following episode two’s bombshell death – and fans are not coping well.

Starring Pedro Pascal as Joel Miller and Bella Ramsey as Ellie Williams, the second episode of the second season of HBO’s The Last of Us sent viewers unfamiliar with the show’s source material reeling as it executed the game’s most brutal twist, killing off Joel at the hands of a very angry Abby Anderson (Kaitlyn Dever) and a golf club.

And because the shock death was not enough for series creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, a tweak to episode three’s intro has twisted the knife (golf club) even further, with a “diabolical” change to the show’s introduction.

Through season one, which is based on 2013’s The Last of Us, and the first two episodes of season two, the show’s intro has ended with two fungus spores standing next to each other, representing Joel and Ellie.

For episode three, named “The Path” and aired yesterday (27 April), there’s been a change that no-one is handling well; Ellie’s spore now stands alone.

The Last of Us intro only showing Ellie and not Joel oh I’m gonna VOMIT,” on X user wrote, with another adding: “Joel is officially gone off the intro.|”

Another added, “Watching the new episode of The Last of Us and I already wanna turn it off cause they didn’t have to mess with the intro like that,” alongside several weeping emojis and a gif of Pascal scream crying.

The Last of Us intro ending with one fungus stalk was diabolical,” another wrote, and yet another added, “And now Ellie stands alone in the intro.”

Viewers reacted to episode two’s twist with shock, but given the TV series’ track record for successfully adapting its source material by Naughty Dog head Druckmann and Mazin, we’d say we’re in safe hands.

Season two stars Isabela Merced as Ellie’s love interest Dina, as well as Catherine O’Hara, Young Mazino, Diego Luna and more alongside Pascal, Ramsey and Dever.

The Last of Us airs on HBO on Sunday nights at 9 p.m. ET and on Mondays in the UK on Sky Atlantic and Now. It is also available to stream on Max.
