Star Wars games will allow players to create trans characters, report claims

Future Star Wars games will allow players to create trans characters, it’s been reported, bringing much needed representation to a galaxy far, far away.

Sources close to We Got This Covered claim that character creators in future Star Wars games will be more inclusive and allow for trans representation.

At present, this remains a rumour and it’s not clear which games this refers to.

Of course, trans representation should be standard across the board. Plenty of indie games, like Boyfriend Dungeon and the forthcoming A Long Journey to an Uncertain End, include diverse pronoun options and don’t gender lock visual options.

AAA games are slowly catching up. Cyberpunk 2077 includes plenty of options, but was criticised for tying these to the gender binary, as well as tying voice to pronouns. The forthcoming Harry Potter game Hogwarts Legacy will also allow players to create trans witches and wizards, despite JK Rowling’s views.

Having the ability to create trans characters in Star Wars games, then, is significant if not obviously required.

On screen LGBT+ representation in Star Wars has been sadly missing, although the showrunner for Disney’s forthcoming series The Acolyte has teased LGBT+ characters.

In the expanded universe comics, meanwhile, there are two trans non-binary Jedi Knights: twins Terec and Ceret. Other LGBT+ characters include Sinjir Rath Velus, Doctor Chelli Aphra, and Grand Admiral Rae Sloane.

So what about the Star Wars games?

There are three known Star Wars games on their way that the rumour could be referring to, beyond any secret projects of course.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga covers the main films and includes canon characters only, so no character creation there.

Star Wars: Hunters is a MOBA style game coming to Switch and mobile that’s set to feature a diverse mix of player characters. How inclusive they will be remains to be seen.

The most likely candidate for the rumours, then, is a forthcoming story-driven open world Star Wars game from Ubisoft. Whether this just ends up being an Assassins Creed-alike set in the Star Wars universe is up for debate among cynics, but at least that series does include LGBT+ lead characters.

It also fits Ubisoft’s apparent remit of being more inclusive, in particular new LGBT+ characters in Rainbow Six Siege. It runs counter to the sexual harassment allegations the company has been rocked by.

We’re still in the dark on whether the rumours of trans character creators are true, but there’s no doubt that trans Jedi are a gaming necessity.
