Hopefully, not long into the future, the US will have its first out gay president. For now, viewers got a glimpse into what that could look like in Netlix’s newest whodunit, The Residence.
The murder mystery series is set in the White House and boasts an all-star cast, including Orange is the New Black‘s Uzo Aduba, WandaVision star Randall Park, and queen of pop Kylie Minogue.
The official synopsis of the series, which is available to stream now on Netflix, reads as follows: “132 rooms. 157 suspects. 1 dead body. 1 wildly eccentric detective. 1 disastrous State Dinner. The Residence, a new series from Shondaland, is a screwball whodunit set in the upstairs, downstairs, and backstairs of the White House, among the eclectic staff of the world’s most famous mansion.”
Aduba plays eccentric detective Cordelia Cupp, hailed as “the best detective in the world”. And the dead body, it turns out, belongs to Giancarlo Esposito’s White House Chief Usher, A.B. Wynter.
Among the suspects are none other than President Perry Morgan (played by Paul Fitzgerald) and husband and First Gentleman Elliot Morgan (Barrett Foa). The actors told The Daily Beast they are both “profoundly proud” to represent the LGBTQ+ community in such noble positions in society in the series.
Fitzgerald told the outlet: “I’m a queer man myself, and probably very straight-presenting. I’m someone who’s very comfortable in my sexuality. I loved just being myself. I didn’t feel like I had to act straight or anything.
“Ultimately, I want to represent that gay people are a multiplicity of things. We can be deadly serious and straight-acting, and we can also jump out of our f***ing seat at Kylie Minogue.”
The Residence is available to stream on Netflix now.
