Kerr’s cover reveal is the first time a woman has been featured on the global edition of a FIFA title cover since the game’s inception in 1993. Other female players have appeared on local editions of the game series, including Steph Catley in late 2015 for the Australian cover of FIFA ’16.

Kerr is no stranger to making history, the Chelsea striker is Australia’s all-time top goal scorer and picked up the prestigious Golden Boot for scoring 20 goals in 20 games over 2021. This cover will also be the first time a queer player has made an appearance on a global cover of a FIFA game.

She came out as LGBTQ+ identifying in August 2021 in an Instagram post after fans successfully theorised that Kerr might be dating fellow footballer Kristie Mewis after shows of intimacy between the two during their match against one another in the Tokyo Olympic Games, leading to the iconic tweet “They’re lesbians, Stacey.”

Since then, both players have been out and proud as one of the most adorable sporting relationships to grace our eyes. Kerr posted a picture of the two embracing in an Instagram post on 31 May, with several users saying “so cute!!” and “love this couple”. Kerr’s Instagram has since become a one-stop source for queer couple cuteness and we’re living for it.

Kerr also celebrated her cover reveal on Tuesday (19 July), saying: “From playing as a kid, to being in the game and now on the global cover! It’s a dream come true.”

The cover reveal for EA Sports’ yearly release is seen as a big deal for football fans as the honour typically goes to the most prominent or iconic players at the time. Wayne Rooney currently holds the record for the most cover appearances, with seven in a row spanning from FIFA ’06 to FIFA ’12.

More information regarding FIFA ’23 is to be revealed on Wednesday (20 July).
