Rylan’s hilarious reaction to ‘barebacking’ chat on This Morning goes viral

If you asked us what we thought we’d hear being discussed on This Morning on VE Day, we’d never say barebacking. And we think Rylan would agree.

The TV personality made his return to the ITV show alongside fellow presenter Emma Willis on Monday (5 May) to commemorating the 80th anniversary of VE Day. And it was a memorable return at that.

At one point, Rylan and Emma were joined by broadcaster Gyles Brandreth for a discussion about digital detoxing.

In a clip circulated online, Rylan cautiously hands the reins over to his co-host explaining, “I don’t want to get us taken off air.” Emma then introduces one way people have been, apparently, taking a break from their devices: a new trend known as ‘barebacking’.

“So, you know, like, horse riding? Where you ride bareback. So, this is called barebacking for Gen-Z,” she went on as Rylan, clutching his mug of tea for dear life, awkwardly looked around.

Emma continued: “Where they travel without anything. So, no backpacks, no digital devices…”. Thanks to some masterful work from the camera operator, viewers got a good look at an uncomfortable Rylan pursing his lips and wondering if this was all real.

And the trend is a real thing. It’s very similar to ‘raw-dogging’ on flights, which has caused a few laughs in the past. This is where passengers enjoy a flight without using devices or in-flight entertainment.

Not bizarre enough, it was at this point Gyles jumped in with his own anecdote. “I began doing this a few years ago. I was called a raw dog.” Rylan’s shocked reaction and look at the camera only makes it funnier!

“I said, ‘Why was I being called a raw dog?’ This can be dangerous,” Gyles continued.

The former Good Morning Britain host and writer went on to say he’d done this “on the Underground.” He added that it was “a little while ago,” and he sat on the Tube “looking ahead. And I think I was going to be arrested.”

Rylan’s reactions to the whole exchange certainly entertained viewers. One person commented on a clip, “I can actually see Rylan fighting for his life.” Another thought he “deserved a medal for keeping it together.”

Another viewer theorised it was all “an Ant and Dec earpiece set up,” referring to the presenter duo’s penchant for such pranks on their friends.
