Mid-Century Modern axed drag icon’s scene because it was ‘too racy’

Mid-Century Modern has finally landed on our screens and is spreading some much-needed queer joy. But it’s been revealed that the series deleted a scene with drag queen Miss Coco Peru because it was “too racy”.

The Hulu sitcom features queer legends Nathan Lane and Nathan Lee Graham alongside Matt Bomer, and follows three friends – billed as gay gentlemen of a certain age. After the unexpected death of a friend, the trio decide to spend their golden years living together in Palm Springs.

During the series press run, Fellow Travelers’ Bomer revealed to the Los Angeles Times that a scene with Coco Peru was axed over “one joke that proved to be too racy”. The outlet stated that the performer starred as a motelier and involved “a vulnerable Jerry, and a drink that’s a play on a gin fizz”.

The scene was Bomer’s “favourite bit from the first episode”, with the outlet also reporting that series showrunners Max Mutchnick and David Kohan – who previously worked with Coco Peru in Will & Grace – “were just as sad to see the bit go”.

The drag performer confirmed that the topic of the scene contained “jokes about jizz”.

Coco Peru said of the scene: “There’s been a lot of you asking what happened to Coco on Mid-Century Modern and why I have a credit. I worked for 2 weeks on the show and, because the show had to be shortened, my scenes were cut even before we started filming.

“I had 2 lines when we filmed and I was happy they got big laughs, but they also ended up cut. Perhaps jokes about jizz aren’t Hulu’s thing.”

Mid-Century Modern showrunner shares deleted scene

On Saturday (5 April), showrunner Mutchnick responded to the buzz around the deleted scene, explaining via an Instagram post that “editing Ms. Coco Peru from the MCM pilot was heartbreaking”.

“Somehow, you guys found out, and because Hulu is such a cool place to work they let us pull it out of the vault for YOU! Ladies and gentlefemmes, I give you Ms. Coco Peru on Mid-Century Modern. (And really good joke from Matt Bomer).”

The showrunner shared the scene, which you can watch below:

Mid-Century Modern is available to stream now on Hulu in the US and on Disney+ in the UK and Australia.
