Man fired after repeatedly wearing bible T-shirts to work to protest LGBTQ+ inclusion

An anti-Pride month Christian who wore Bible-themed T-shirts, and claimed he was fired for doing so, has reached a settlement in a lawsuit with his former employer.

Devout Christian Cosby “Corey” Cunningham sued his former employer Eaton Corp, an American-Irish multinational power management company, in June 2024, a year after it initiated a ceremony recognising LGBTQ+ Pride month.

He claimed that the global power management company had violated his civil rights after erecting a Pride flag and encouraging staff to support the celebratory month and, should they wish, wear pro-LGBTQ+ shirts, which were available to buy.

As reported by the Iowa Capital Dispatch, Cunningham responded to the initiative by wearing T-shirts with bible verses printed on. A print on one of his T-shirts read, “Pride goes before destruction, an arrogant spirit before a fall. Proverbs 16:18.”

According to a local news website, another T-shirt read, “Taking back the rainbow. Genesis 9:13.” A third read, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. James 4:6.”

After management refused his requests to wear such T-shirts, and he was sent home on at least two occasions, he was finally fired in August 2023.

Attorney for the Pacific Justice Institute, Robert Anderson, represented Cunningham, but Anderson didn’t share specific details about the settlement.

Cunningham isn’t the first person to be fired for not abiding by inclusivity workplace policies.

In 2023, an employee who was fired for refusing to take part in LGBTQ+ inclusivity training lost an application to appeal his dismissal. Three years prior, a teacher who was fired for misgendering a trans student was sacked from a second school after he called Muhammad a “false prophet”.

In the US, president Donald Trump’s administration is working to rollback diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) practices. The move has seen pro-DEI shoppers unite to boycott retailers such as Walmart and Target, who have removed or scaled back their DEI programmes in response to Trump’s executive orders.
